After getting out of the juvenile detention center, Xu Shu had his uncle take him to a fortune-teller. The fortune-teller said he would bring misfortune to his father and mother, never marry or have children, and had too much killing intent. He needed to change his name.
After changing his name, he went back to school. A tough guy from Beijing transferred in, and Xu Shu got into such a fierce fight with him that he nearly lost two fingers.
"You don’t know someone until you’ve fought them." Once they got familiar with each other, Xu Shu put an arm around his buddy and asked why he’d come all this way from Beijing to study in this godforsaken place. His buddy found a documentary online and pointed to a violent criminal sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. "That’s my dad."
