❄️ "You are the snow on the western hills, and I am a passing guest in this world"
Top-tier investor x national broadcaster reporter
Spoiled young heir x outwardly gentle, inwardly strong
Reunion after a long separation + rekindled romance
Cheng Shangjia once wrote in her diary that the first half of her life had been one long history of helping the poor.
It took her thirteen years to make it onto the national broadcaster's finance channel.
She spoke flawless, standard Mandarin, and no one could tell she was a country girl who had clawed her way out of the remote mountains of the southwest.
She shone brightly, dazzlingly, and loved someone out of her league without knowing her place.
Shang Shaoyin
A top scion of an elite family, raised in a sprawling compound behind the red walls. He had been born at the top of the pyramid.
At a crucial interview, the scheduled guest suddenly backed out, threatening to leave the program with nothing to air.
No one said it outright, but she knew this might be a silent "warning" from someone in that circle.
She never asked Shang Shaoyin for help.
Yet on the day of the interview, a renowned industry veteran personally stepped in to save the day, treating her with almost excessive caution.
Late at night, she walked out of the building.
A black GLS with a Beijing A · 9999 license plate sat waiting quietly. He leaned lazily against the car door, a cigarette between his fingers.
In the night breeze, Shang Shaoyin spotted her and stubbed out his cigarette.
"Come here."
Only when she reached him did he straighten up. He put an arm around her shoulders and drew her into his embrace.
"Feeling more at ease now? Hmm?"
"As long as the sky doesn't fall, you don't have to follow anyone else's rules in this city. Just trust me."
She took one extra glance at the jadeite brooch featured at an auction, and that evening it appeared beside her bed.
When she asked how much it cost, he pushed a plate of western-hill bayberries toward her without even bothering to look up.
"If you like it, wear it for fun. What's the point of asking the price?"
He paved a brilliant future for her with his own hands.
But Cheng Shangjia stayed clear-eyed: this relationship was doomed to end without a future.
The day they broke up, Beijing was hit by its heaviest blizzard in a decade.
He parked his car across the entrance to the airport expressway. The window rolled down, and the usual playful look on his face had turned cold.
"Cheng Shangjia, have I spoiled you too much? Is leaving really the only thing you want?"
The wind and snow blew cold into her collar. Cheng Shangjia gazed quietly at the man she had loved for so many years.
"Shang Shaoyin, let's stop here."
"I'll walk the rest of the way on my own."
He looked at her for a long moment, then nodded and stubbed out his cigarette in the car's ashtray. "If you've made up your mind, fine. I don't take back someone who's left me."
Five years later, on a rainy night.
Cheng Shangjia worked until midnight and stood outside the Guomao building waiting for a ride-hailing car.
A black Bentley rolled through the puddles and stopped right in front of her. The window lowered, revealing Shang Shaoyin's expressionless profile.
Rain slid down the glass. His gaze passed over the ring on her left ring finger, and he asked casually,
"Where's your husband?"
Cheng Shangjia raised her eyes slightly. "Dead."
He stared at her for a long moment, then turned his head and let out a mocking laugh. "Good. Saves me the trouble of killing him myself."
