Duan Lin was an accident.

The day he and Duan Yue fought over breaking up, Xiang Shuyu was in low spirits. That evening, his friends plied him with too much alcohol at a banquet. He was in heat, burning up and dazed, when someone carried him home.

A familiar pheromone filled the air. Clinging to the alpha, Xiang Shuyu murmured, "Hubby."

The next morning, he woke to a mess. Sobbing, he told Duan Lin that jasmine smelled a lot like tuberose, and he'd simply mistaken him for someone else.

"But Duan Yue never marked you," Duan Lin said coolly. "You two have already broken up. I'm the one who marked you now."

"All right, stop crying." Duan Lin reached out to wipe away his tears. "I'll take responsibility. I'll marry you, but you have to cut things off with Duan Yue completely."

Xiang Shuyu didn't want anyone to take responsibility. He just wanted to break up.

But Duan Yue didn't want to break up, much less watch Duan Lin openly pursue his ex-boyfriend.

His younger brother had always had whatever he had. There was no reason he should have to give up the person he loved just because his brother had met him too.

The brothers' fighting was childish, but Xiang Shuyu was always the one left suffering.

At night, someone would sneak into his bed, hold him while releasing pheromones, kiss the back of his neck, and ask, "Who am I?"

Xiang Shuyu couldn't tell faces apart, or distinguish pheromones, so he always guessed wrong.

Every wrong guess brought a storm of taking and kisses, followed by the demand: "Which one of us do you want more? Him or me?"

Xiang Shuyu wanted neither of them. Duan Yue's manipulation, Duan Lin's possessiveness, and the two of them fighting over him and coveting him were suffocating him.

After his mother died, he felt completely free. On a sunny afternoon, he left them with the words, "Stop bothering me," and disappeared without a trace.

Xiang Shuyu was free for two years.

Two years later, at a celebratory banquet, he made one careless mistake and drank spiked liquor.

Dazed and staggering toward his room, he was suddenly grabbed over the mouth to stifle his cries for help, then dragged inside.

Familiar pheromones filled the room. A scorching palm stroked his neck, while a strong arm circled his waist, as though countless vines had wrapped tightly around him.

Kisses fell thick and fast. Xiang Shuyu struggled in vain, hearing only the man's voice: "I've changed everything you didn't like about me. Can you forgive me and stay with me?"

Xiang Shuyu's vision blurred, and his body swayed. He pointed at the person before him and asked, "Who are you...?"

The man silently bit his Adam's apple. "Take a guess."

Xiang Shuyu guessed wrong again, and the consequences were severe.

After two years apart, it seemed both his ex-boyfriends had turned into madmen.

Yu Ning took the bus to the zoo, but since he had no sense of direction, he boarded the wrong one and, half asleep, rode all the way to the last stop.

As soon as he got off, the bus whooshed out of sight.

There was nothing but wilderness around him, and no one else in sight, so Yu Ning had to look for a bus stop to head back on his own.

But after walking this way and that, he realized he was completely lost.

At last, Yu Ning found a pharmacy by the roadside. Holding out his phone, which had gone cold and dead, he quietly asked the shopkeeper if he could charge it.

The shopkeeper raised an eyebrow and stared at him for a while, then turned around and called someone, speaking in a language Yu Ning couldn't understand.

Yu Ning sat pitifully in a chair at the pharmacy, staring into space.

Before long, a pair of military boots appeared in his field of vision. When he looked up, he saw a tall, stern man in uniform standing before him, holding out an ID as he said:

"Lu Rao, head of the Third Military District. Come with us."

Yu Ning realized he seemed to have wandered into some isolated paradise. He couldn't understand the local dialect, but the man in uniform could speak Mandarin.

He didn't know the area, his phone had no signal, and the local internet couldn't connect to the outside world. Yu Ning couldn't even say where his home was, so he could only stay at Lu Rao's house and wait for him to come home each day and feed him.

Lu Rao was very good at taking care of people. In the morning, he reminded Yu Ning to drink warm water. Before work, he took him for a walk in the park. When he came home, he prepared books for him.

At lunchtime, after Lu Rao got off work, his uniform hung on a coat rack as he stood in the kitchen wearing an apron, poring over a book.

Yu Ning was very grateful to Lu Rao, though sometimes he was troubled, too.

He kept thinking that Lu Rao's house wasn't clean. Otherwise, why did it always feel like something thick and cold was wrapped around him when he slept at night? It made him have nightmares, where a giant snake swallowed him whole.

And lately, Lu Rao... seemed a little restless, too.

"Lu Rao..." Yu Ning saw his figure again in the dark garage. "Why aren't you coming home again? Are you drunk?"

He walked into the darkness, intending to carry the drunk back home as he had before.

Only when he reached Lu Rao did he realize the man wasn't drunk at all. His faintly glowing eyes were narrow as a snake's, fixed on Yu Ning with greedy, clear-headed attention.

Yu Ning instinctively took a step back, but something caught his foot and sent him sprawling to the ground.

A snake's tail coiled around him. Lu Rao constricted his "prey," yet remained remarkably restrained.

"Can I kiss you?" Lu Rao asked softly. "It's all right if I can't."

"I started liking you the moment I saw you."

"You're the most beautiful human I've ever seen, and the human I like most."
