Paying Respects to the Ninth Thousand Years

Lanting found a little wolf cub born to a palace maid: the Ninth Prince, Li Chengyan.

He was gloomy, brutal, bloodthirsty, and ill-tempered. But Lanting's goal was to look after him, win him over, and put him on the throne.

Lanting took rather poor care of him, doing his utmost to play an inept little eunuch who could barely keep himself safe. He checked in with the System on time, hoping only to retire as soon as possible.

But gradually, things started to feel a little off.

After Li Chengyan discovered that Lanting had "divided loyalties," he not only refrained from hating, killing, or taking revenge on him, but also had him shed his eunuch's uniform and become the all-powerful governor of the Eastern Depot, a treacherous villain who, in the eyes of the noble and upright ministers, deserved to die a thousand deaths.

Lanting's retirement check-in never succeeded. One day, he saw the emperor again, still awake in the middle of the night, rolling into his arms to fight him for space on the bed. Unable to hold back, he demanded, "What do you want, exactly?"

But the ruler of all under Heaven looked gloomy, his eyes full of grievance and resentment.

"What I want is something you can't give me."

Lanting raised an eyebrow, understanding his meaning. "How do you know you can't, if you don't ask?"
