The Summer That Remains

Childhood sweethearts, deeply devoted; two young hearts in perfect harmony; a loving bond free of doubt, vowing to stay together until their hair turns white.

I thought Tsunayoshi and I would keep going like this forever, until the end of time, until the universe itself fell into ruin.

Until that midsummer came, I never wavered in that belief.

But then that summer arrived.

We drifted farther apart. He kept things from me. Every time I tried to ask, he shut me down, and every hopeful look I gave him was met with silence.

Only then did I understand that there was no future left for us.

So that summer, I chose to leave.

And he never tried to stop me.

I left Namimori Town and came to Tokyo.

There, I met the woman I would love.

She was gentle and strong. Even in her own pain, all she ever showed me was a smile.

She was dazzling.

"Oh? Hanazome Kogure. What a lovely name. Can I call you Kogure?"

"Then can I call you Ran?"

That was how we first met.
