I, Zhu Luo, am an utterly ordinary nobody. My greatest achievement in life was secretly loving the Immortal Venerable Ying Mingshan for ten years.
Until the night of the victory banquet in the immortal realm, when he stumbled into my room, eyes hazy with drink, his burning breath brushing my ear:
"Luo'er, your master has held back for far too long..."
My heart thundered. I thought my ten years of unrequited love had finally seen the light of day.
The next second, the door burst open, and everyone cried out in shock.
That gentle, jade-like Immortal Venerable, the paragon of the immortal realm, pointed at me in front of everyone, his voice as cold as ice:
"Wretched disciple Zhu Luo, seducing your master and bringing disgrace upon the immortal sect. By the law, your cultivation shall be crippled, and you shall receive ninety lashes."
As the thunder chains pierced my shoulder blades, the Demon Venerable Xing Jin, slaughtering a city thousands of miles away, felt a sudden, agonizing pain in his heart.
He tore through space and arrived amid the blood-red sky above the Execution Platform. In one swift motion, he pulled me into his arms.
"My person," he said, raising his eyes to sweep over the assembled immortals, each word deliberate:
"Who gave you the right to lay a hand on them?"
Only later did I learn this was called "shared sensation": when I was hurt, he felt pain; if I died, he would be injured.
The immortal sect issued an order to kill me. I became a traitor wanted by both the immortal and demon realms.
On the run, the Demon Venerable, rumored to be a merciless killer who despised the world, gripped my chin and sneered:
"If you don't want to die, learn some magic. Don't hold me back."
He taught me magic and made me serve him. He kept saying, "If you die, you'll be a nuisance to me," yet whenever danger struck, he shielded me with his own body.
Until my radiant, noble Immortal Venerable appeared once more, covered in blood and kneeling before me:
"Luo'er, your master regrets it... Come back with me. We can start over."
Just as my eyes reddened, Xing Jin suddenly slashed his own arm with a sword.
The pain shot through our shared sensation, and I curled up, writhing.
He licked the blood from his arm, his gaze sinister:
"Look closely. The reason you're hurting now is me."
