Rumor has it that Ye, the owner of Luxing Bookshop, secretly does business with the dead. He opens his doors at night, and all his customers are vengeful ghosts who met violent ends. Boss Ye is all-powerful: he helps them settle scores and right wrongs, and even moonlights as a detective. There's nothing he can't do.
The price is becoming one of his ghosts, doomed to never reincarnate.
He has thrown the underworld into chaos, yet even it can do nothing about him. That's because among the ghosts he keeps is a fearsome fiend, one so formidable that even the King of Hell has to think twice.
Little do people know that this supposedly all-powerful Boss Ye is actually a deadbeat who frets over the rent every day and is behind on his employees' wages.
"Xiaomei, pour me a cup of tea."
His employee Xiaomei ignores him, engrossed in a game of Zuma with frogs on her computer. "Pay me first."
Boss Ye clutches his chest and sighs. Suddenly, a mass of black mist reaches out from the shadows of the window frame, picks up the teapot, and fills the cup before him.
"What ghosts? What fearsome fiends? What nonsense."
Boss Ye takes a sip of tea and pats the air beside him.
"All I have is a cashier girl on strike and a stupid dog. Ah, the future looks bleak."
As he speaks, something rubs against his palm.
**
When a divine official in charge of Heavenly Court affairs comes to the bookshop in person to retrieve a treasure stolen some time ago, he sees the fan hovering behind the deadbeat and fanning him. Overcome with sorrow, he asks:
"When are you going to give Your Excellency back?"
"I've been ready to give him back for ages."
Boss Ye rolls over on his chaise longue. The fan drops to the floor, and black mist crawls up his raised leg, cold and heavy.
"He won't leave on his own. What am I supposed to do?"
