Chen Xiuyang's previous life was an utter failure.

After her husband died, she remarried with Guan Ze. Her mother-in-law was domineering, her husband drank heavily, and she had no skills of her own, so she could only put up with it.

When her husband got drunk yet again, Chen Xiuyang couldn't take it anymore. Guan Ze injured him while trying to protect her and was sent to juvenile detention.

Chen Xiuyang died before Guan Ze was released. Only after her death did she learn that the world she lived in was just a novel. Her child, Guan Ze, was the male antagonist's sidekick in the book. He died young and alone, and all the success he had worked so hard to achieve ended up benefiting someone else.

Chen Xiuyang was so furious she nearly came back to life, and when she opened her eyes, she was back in 1995.

Guan Ze was four and a half. The little boy ran back from the fields barefoot, his fingernails packed with dirt, but he placed half a sweet potato in front of her. His eyes were dewy and bright. "Mom, eat!"

Her former husband from her previous life showed up with a pound of pork, smiling broadly. "Xiuyang, eat well and build up your strength."

Chen Xiuyang slammed the door shut.

"Get lost!"

She wasn't getting married again. She only wanted to raise Guan Ze and live her life.

In 1995, every family in the village farmed, and after the harvest they still had to hand over grain to the state. Everyone was scraping by, and it was hard to even afford meat. But Chen Xiuyang knew what the outside world was like.

To make money, she started out by setting up a little food stall with her child...

Some gossip had recently been making the rounds in Chenjia Village: the village Party secretary's second daughter, known for her good temper, had broken off her engagement.

Everyone said the family that ran the butcher shop was well-off. They didn't mind that she was divorced and had a child, yet she refused to marry him and even took her child to the city to sell snacks from a stall: tofu pudding, corn cakes, cold tossed noodles...

Would anyone really buy that stuff?

The villagers all waited to see the Chen family make a fool of themselves, only to see Chen Xiuyang buy a house in the city, settle down there with her child, and drive back to the village for the New Year...

Her life just kept getting better with every passing year.
