After transmigrating into a book, Sang Ru found himself inhabiting Pei Huannian, a former dynasty’s prince and the villain of a political intrigue novel, whose attempt to restore his dynasty had failed. Even after five years, Sang Ru still remembered Pei Huannian’s fate vividly: he was torn apart by five horses.
To survive in this world, Sang Ru’s first thought was to find a chance to escape. But no matter how much he tried to avoid it, some mysterious force always dragged him back and pushed him along the story’s major plot points.
So Sang Ru decided to change tactics and latch onto the male lead, Liang Qiancang.
Clinging to someone’s coattails might not sound very dignified, but what did dignity matter if it kept him alive?
When the emperor sent Liang Qiancang to the freezing borderlands, Sang Ru dispatched Pei Huannian’s advisers elsewhere and went with Liang Qiancang, helping him drive back the Hu raiders who repeatedly attacked the border. When Liang Qiancang was framed and thrown into prison, Sang Ru used his own connections to investigate the truth and clear his name. When Liang Qiancang had little support at court, Sang Ru secretly helped him build up his power until he reached the position second only to the emperor.
Sang Ru stayed by Liang Qiancang’s side from the time he was a disregarded seventeen-year-old prince until he became emperor at twenty-four. Knowing that the tallest tree catches the most wind, and that standing too far in the limelight could bring disaster, Sang Ru fled on the day Liang Qiancang ascended the throne.
But just when he thought Liang Qiancang would let him go out of gratitude for all his help, a wanted poster bearing his likeness appeared across the country.
Suddenly, even the melon seeds in his mouth didn’t taste good.
Sang Ru: So I can’t escape being torn apart by five horses after all?
Liang Qiancang died in the second year of his reign. Before his death, Pei Huannian stabbed him with a sword coated in a poison for which there was no antidote. Reborn, Liang Qiancang was determined to kill him at their very first meeting, the coming-of-age banquet, and eliminate the threat once and for all.
But who could have guessed that when Pei Huannian, whom Liang Qiancang had pushed into the water, climbed back out, he seemed to have become a different person? Unlike in his previous life, when he’d opposed Liang Qiancang at every turn, he now clung to him every day, following him wherever he went and refusing to be shaken off.
Looking at Pei Huannian beside him, his foxlike eyes narrowed in an innocent expression, Liang Qiancang frowned.
What trick is he trying to pull now?
But as that delicate flower rescued him from danger again and again, Liang Qiancang’s hatred for Pei Huannian gradually faded, replaced by an unrestrained possessiveness that grew wildly. He wanted to keep him locked at his side every moment of every day.
On the day of his enthronement ceremony, Liang Qiancang surveyed the assembled court officials, but Pei Huannian was nowhere to be seen. Beneath his imperial robes, his hands clenched with a crackling sound.
Liang Qiancang gritted his teeth. Pei Huannian, I’ll find you and drag you back, no matter where you run!
Fast asleep in the middle of the night, Sang Ru felt a slight tickle against his neck. He opened his eyes, and his heart nearly leapt out of his throat! Liang Qiancang, who should have been in the imperial palace, was lying beside him, his piercing eyes fixed on him like a hawk watching its prey.
Liang Qiancang: “General Pei, you slept with me and thought you could run?”
Sang Ru: “I, I was drunk and things got out of hand…”
Before he could finish, Liang Qiancang pinned both his hands with one hand. That handsome face suddenly loomed closer, burying itself in Sang Ru’s neck.
Sang Ru let out a pained whimper. “How does my flesh taste, Your Highness? Did you enjoy biting me?”
Liang Qiancang looked up. “Are you going to run again?”
Sang Ru forced a smile. “Nope.” As if!
He runs, he chases, and neither of them can escape.

1. Happy ending, one-on-one romance, transmigration into a book and rebirth, fictional setting with lots of original details. Please don’t compare it to history.
2. Both leads are strong, with careers and romance given equal weight. Please go easy on me.
3. There’s a pursuit-and-reconciliation arc, but no groveling-at-the-crematorium trope.
