Fang Yingqiu has Cotard's syndrome. Simply put, although she is alive, she firmly believes she is dead.
Always feeling out of place among those around her, she unexpectedly enters a terrifying game called The Frightening Life.
The place is full of danger. Horrifying urban legends spawn countless small worlds that terrify everyone, forcing them to clear one level after another. Most players can barely stay alive, living in constant fear.
When Fang Yingqiu first enters the game, she breathes in the air thick with the smell of death. Hearing the wails around her, all portents of imminent doom, she turns and hugs the red wedding-dress ghost who has leapt out to scare her.
How lovely. It's as wonderful as coming home.
Looking at the girl's adoring expression, the NPC who became a female ghost after losing her child: "...!!!"
Help, my maternal instincts are overflowing!
Inside the game.
Player A: "Ahhh! Watch your left! There's a thousand-year-old zombie climbing through the window!"
Fang Yingqiu takes a burial robe that smells of laundry detergent from the kindly zombie. "It's fine. Grandma just doesn't want me to get cold."
Player B: "There's a hanging ghost on the ceiling! Ahhh, run downstairs!"
Fang Yingqiu pats the other player's shoulder reassuringly. "Don't be scared. It's just my brother working out."
Player C: "We ran into a starving ghost in this famine scenario. We're doomed! He's going to make us his next meal, sob, "
The starving players then watch, wide-eyed, as the starving ghost opens a food container filled with provisions.
Fang Yingqiu: "Wow! Thanks, Dad!"
The players: "???"
The players: "!!!"
Player D: "We're really going to die this time... We're cornered by an A-rank boss, and now the S-rank scenario boss, the Red Wedding-Dress Ghost, has somehow wandered in here too, shouting, 'Give me back my child!' She's clearly gone berserk, sob, "
Fang Yingqiu coughs softly twice.
Player A: "Could it be..."
Player B: "Maybe you..."
Player C: "Don't tell me..."
Fang Yingqiu: "Sorry. I'm the child she's talking about."
Much later, in the real world.
A friend looks at Cen Yang, who doesn't even flinch inside the haunted house, and asks in confusion, "Aren't you terrified of ghosts?"
Why are you so calm today?
Cen Yang falls silent. "Because my mother-in-law is here."
Friend: "?"
