Bai Zhi, the Goddess of Purification, died in a mutual death with her sworn enemy of decades, the Ghost King Qi Yu.
When she opened her eyes, she had transmigrated into the frail third princess of the Jiang Kingdom, Zi Yuan.
The world said she was as beautiful as an immortal, with crystal butterfly wings as lovely as thin silk, and revered her for protecting all living things. But now she could only inhabit the good-for-nothing body of Zi Yuan. Even after her father arranged her engagement to Wen Shu, the Xia Kingdom heir notorious for his bloodlust and murderous nature, she kept striving upward like a resilient climbing flower, undaunted by adversity.
Then she discovered that Wen Shu was Qi Yu, the very man she'd fought to the death with, and that he too had ended up in someone else's body. Fate had branded them with a curse that would bind them together for all eternity. Bai Zhi was furious.
She had to escape Qi Yu and return to being the goddess who protected the mortal world.
Later, by a stroke of luck, she briefly experienced a vision of the future through the power of a sacred treasure. Her future self lay on a bed woven from clouds, nestled in Qi Yu's arms, their love tender and mutual.
Bai Zhi threw up.
The Ghost King Qi Yu was obsessive and mad, with a face as beautiful as jade and red-tipped peach blossom eyes. He was a beauty wrapped in a ghost's form, a demon wearing human skin.
Everyone hated him for commanding ten thousand ghosts and slaughtering countless people, but none knew he bore the resentment of millions and had crawled out of a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood, left to walk the world alone.
He was even willing to accept the curse, [You will fall in love with the person you harmed, and your fates will be bound together for eternity], if it meant eliminating Bai Zhi, the Goddess of Purification, who stood in his way.
Later, after taking refuge in Wen Shu's body, he reunited with Bai Zhi. The curse of fate meant he could no longer kill her, so all he could do was cling to her. Then he saw her heart belonged to Yun Huaqing, and jealousy surged through him. He wanted to break all her limbs and imprison her at his side forever.
Qi Yu thought he would never lose to a mere curse of fate.
Later, Bai Zhi sat on his throne, her eyes empty as a puppet's. The man who'd always been untouchable knelt at her feet, eyes red, begging pathetically: "Don't be like this, Bai Zhi. Please, say something, all right?"
At first, Qi Yu said, "What's so bad about being a goddess? Everyone worships you, and even the Yun Huaqing you love is proud of you."
Bai Zhi said, "Get lost."
Later, Qi Yu said, "Try the sweet peppers I made, your favorite. Try on this outfit I picked out for you, and..."
Bai Zhi said, "You're so annoying."
