Yae Miko snapped the poetry collection in her hands shut and rubbed her aching eyes, weary from overwork. Grumbling in displeasure, she said, "Humans just love writing these sappy poems about love. Hah... You ask me? Naturally, I have no taste for such hackneyed stories of things remaining while people are gone!"

After listening to the shrine maiden's grand pronouncement, the little fox spirit instinctively glanced out the window at the sword mound. Green grass grew lush over the grave, and a plate of fried tofu and two cups of wine sat before the tombstone.

The season of blooming cherry blossoms had come again.

"Stay here and watch over the shrine for me." Yae Miko stretched, rose, and headed toward the sword mound. "I'm going to visit an old friend."
