Most of Jiang Yuxing's relationships ended before they ever really began.
But that was her own fault. She never learned her lesson, always bringing her girlfriends to meet Zhuang Ning.
Half of them would fall for Zhuang Ning as soon as they met her, then apologize to Jiang Yuxing.
The other half would feel inadequate and grow increasingly suspicious, until they finally asked Jiang Yuxing before leaving, “Zhuang Ning is so outstanding. Are you really not interested in her?”
Jiang Yuxing was helpless in these situations. Whether they were one type or the other, she had only one thing to say to them.
“Zhuang Ning is straight.”
At the cafe, Zhuang Ning listened to her venting from across the table. She took a sip of coffee and smiled elegantly. “That just means they aren't good enough for you.”
Unlike Jiang Yuxing, who had been called a weirdo since childhood and liked doing things her own way, Zhuang Ning was the perfect, flawless achiever who always lived in the spotlight.
But she was never arrogant or conceited, and was always gentle and friendly. Teachers and parents praised her. The boys saw her as an unattainable goddess, while the girls never envied her. Instead, they admired her and all wanted to be her friend.
Even now, Zhuang Ning had a life others envied. After graduating from a prestigious university, she joined a well-known company and became an executive at a young age. She was polished and poised, still as dazzling as she had been in school. At reunions, everyone spoke of her with admiration.
In short, she was like everyone's unattainable first love.
Strangely, though, no one had ever truly stayed by her side. No one except Jiang Yuxing.
The unconventional Jiang Yuxing had plenty of friends, while the flawless Zhuang Ning had only Jiang Yuxing.
So Jiang Yuxing let some things go instead of dwelling on them. After all, Zhuang Ning only had her as a friend.
Yes, just a friend.
Though countless people had suspected otherwise, they really were just friends.
Until Jiang Yuxing met a girl who was innocent and passionate, and deeply in love with her. Even after meeting Zhuang Ning, the girl didn't fall for someone else or doubt that Jiang Yuxing and Zhuang Ning were just friends.
In front of Zhuang Ning, the girl beamed and clung tightly to Jiang Yuxing's arm. “I believe in A Xing's feelings for me.”
Just as she was about to make things official with the girl, Jiang Yuxing received a call from Zhuang Ning's mother, who said Zhuang Ning had been missing for a day and a night.
Jiang Yuxing finally found Zhuang Ning in a familiar place.
She walked slowly over to Zhuang Ning, just as she had nine years ago.
The other woman was curled up in a corner, hugging her knees. Her eyes were unfocused, and she looked utterly disheveled, nothing like her usual composed, elegant self.
Only when she saw Jiang Yuxing did a glimmer of light return to her dim, lifeless eyes. She couldn't help but cry.
“Don't be with someone else, okay?”
Jiang Yuxing crouched down, patiently wiping the tears from her face. Calmly, she said, “No.”
Have you forgotten, Zhuang Ning?
You were the one who said we would only be friends.
