After Fu Fangyi's family falls on hard times and she can barely keep herself fed, she leads a donkey to the capital to seek help from her distinguished fiancé.
When she first arrives in the capital, Fu Fangyi leads her sick donkey into the street and blocks the carriage of the Duan family's young master.
Amid the uproar of the noble young ladies, she says in a trembling voice, "My husband, I've come."
The carriage curtain is lifted with a folding fan, revealing a man as cool and distant as the moon. His eyes darken. "Who taught you to go around calling random men your husband?"
Then he drives off.
The next day, the Duan family's steward arrives with a marriage contract.
"Miss, my young master asks when it would be convenient for you to marry into the family."

After marrying Duan Yunchen, Fu Fangyi focuses on using the Duan family to find out what happened to her elder sister. But the rules in the inner household are strict, and her sister-in-law makes things difficult at every turn. She has to tread carefully every day.
The day news arrives from her elder sister, Fu Fangyi puts on her cloak and goes out to find her. By chance, she runs into a young man whose features resemble Duan Yunchen's.
The young man is about her age. After looking her over, he greets her respectfully and calls her "aunt by marriage."
Seeing the donkey tied up in the courtyard, he can't help saying, "I heard Grandmother once arranged a marriage for me using a donkey. What a coincidence."
Fu Fangyi narrows her eyes.
She recalls their wedding night. Beneath the gauzy curtains, gloom wells up in Duan Yunchen's eyes.
"Now that you've called me your husband, you can't trade me in."
