Marriage first, love later | Childhood sweethearts | He has been pursuing her all along
Lu Zhaoye disappeared right after they got drunk and registered their marriage.
Wen Mi held the marriage certificate and managed a smile even worse than a grimace. Of course he was afraid she'd latch onto him.
Lu Zhaoye was a rising star in the business world, a capital hunter from a distinguished family. His charming eyes had countless people falling for him, and even watching him read a financial report could make your heart race. He was known as the "ideal man of the finance world," and was famous for being aloof and cold-hearted.
She, on the other hand, was an illustrator holed up in a peeling gallery, worrying about the cost of paint. Her studio was on the verge of bankruptcy.
They were worlds apart. It had all been an accident.
On the day she brought up divorce, Lu Zhaoye was surrounded by society's elite. His long fingers idly held a champagne glass, and when his gaze passed over her, all that remained was indifference.
Wen Mi emphasized, "It was an accident. We don't have to count anything acquired after marriage. Once the waiting period is over, we'll divorce."
Lu Zhaoye adjusted his cuff and gave a faint, "Mm."
Later.
She attended her childhood friend's wedding and, as soon as she arrived, heard the others discussing the financial headlines about Lu Zhaoye's secret marriage.
Her friend teased her: "You and Lu Zhaoye played husband and wife as kids. If you'd made your move earlier, you'd be Mrs. Lu by now."
Wen Mi paused with her glass raised, then laughed and changed the subject. "He's not into girls like me."
After the wedding,
a few of Lu Zhaoye's friends gathered around him, asking whether the news about him was true.
"So, which rich family's daughter did you marry?"
Someone beside them chimed in, "You believe gossip? It's got to be fake."
Lu Zhaoye toyed with his glass. After a long while, he lifted his gaze toward Wen Mi and chuckled.
"It's true."
"She dumped me right after we registered our marriage."
A little scene:
It happened on a transcontinental flight.
A representative from a partner company accidentally entered Lu Zhaoye's private cabin and happened to catch him on the phone with his wife.
A mutter came from the other end: "I saw a ragdoll cat today. It was all fluffy, just like you."
The man, in the middle of an international conference call, froze for a moment.
Then he took off his gold-rimmed glasses, warmth filling his eyes as he chuckled.
"Your wife knows you miss me."
"But if you keep talking, I won't be able to hold back."
Coming soon: Cang Dog and Seagull
The day You Lu realized Chen Xizhou disliked her, she moved to the front row, decided to end her two-year crush, and deleted Chen Xizhou on the spot.
That night, though, a message from Chen Xizhou arrived on her alternate account:
"Who are you?"
You Lu: ...
With trembling hands, she thought it over before replying with a fake name.
As a nobody on Chen Xizhou's friends list, she was like a cang dog and a seagull: meeting briefly, destined to part...
She let herself get lost in this false sweetness, hiding behind a fake identity.
But one day, Chen Xizhou confessed to her alternate account.
You Lu was so startled she knocked over her milk carton.
At their graduation party, You Lu sat curled up alone in a corner, hugging a bottle of liquor as she scrolled through Chen Xizhou's social media. Then she deleted him from her alternate account.
Just then, Chen Xizhou, who was supposed to be abroad for a competition, appeared in the doorway, drenched. A few strands of his fringe were wet with rain, but not a trace of his aristocratic air was diminished.
In the dead silence, he walked straight toward You Lu.
His tall, rain-soaked figure loomed over her. Without a word of greeting, he trapped her in the corner of the sofa.
"Deleted me twice? Hmm?" Water dripped from his wet hair, and his low voice made her heart tremble.
A faint hint of grievance colored his eyes.
"Add me back."
"Start dating me. Now."
When a cang dog meets a seagull, their encounter doesn't have to be fleeting.
The cang dog stays for the seagull, and the seagull comes ashore for the cang dog.
