Rong Jihai couldn't quite figure out what had gone wrong in his otherwise orderly life. Just as he was about to give up, the heavens had apparently decided on a whim to drop a dragon out of the sky, sending dust billowing across the courtyard he'd just finished cleaning up.

Reason told him he should call the police at once, or some other number for whoever was in charge of this area. Who knew what government department handled dragons? He needed to call someone, before his life ended in the jaws of a creature that enormous.

But, as if possessed, he simply stared blankly at the creature before him, which was staring back at him just as curiously, and recalled hazy memories from his childhood.

He reached out and touched the dragon's hard, icy scales. The dragon didn't open its bloody maw. It merely blew a hot breath across his face.

The dragon stayed.

Then Rong Jihai realized this was a mistake of the worst kind.

During the first week, the man and dragon got along peacefully. Rong Jihai even found enough medical supplies to treat the dragon's wounds. The dragon was very docile, as if its mouthful of sharp teeth were merely little tools for chewing tough plants, never used to pierce the flesh of another animal.

During the second week, it was a man and a... half-dragon, if they could still be said to be getting along peacefully. Rong Jihai looked at that not-quite-proficient human body and fell silent for a long moment. In the end, he carefully said, "Human bodies aren't supposed to have just one wing, or one hand and one claw. And of course they don't have tails... What do you think?"

During the third week, at last there were two complete people, no more and no less. They were getting along... until something happened.

Xiu, the dragon's name, looked at Rong Jihai with those dragon pupils that hadn't completely changed, seeming quite innocent. He obediently let the other man clasp his wrist, then asked with concern:

"You seemed to really like my tail and horns before. I can grow them again. Would you like to touch them?"

Rong Jihai didn't answer. He simply gazed intently at Xiu's neck, where the pattern of scales had yet to fade completely.

Then he opened his mouth and bit down hard, as if he were the real dragon from the legends, the one notorious for its evil deeds and love of eating people.

He could put up with all that. He could carry out his plans in secret, and as for the supervision... well, he happened to need a place to stay.

What bothered him was that, even though he'd told the man his name, the man still called him "Xiaoguai" from time to time. How had he ended up saddled with such a revolting name?
