Raising

In 2045, the apocalypse arrived. Insect infestations ran rampant, and humanity became prey to the insect race.

To fight these monsters, people banded together to form teams dedicated to hunting insects, beginning their fight for survival.

But as the insect race devoured more and more humans, larvae born in the hives began to inscribe human genes into themselves, taking on human appearances.

They were evolving, faster and faster, and becoming harder and harder to deal with.

Su Qian was an insect hunter.

One day, she hunted down an insect larva in the hive of a queen insect.

It looked completely identical to a human.

It blinked slowly as it looked at her.

After a moment, it reached out to her.

“Hold me.”

Those were the first words it said to her.

Su Qian had wanted to kill it.

But her teammates stopped her.

“Keep it. We might be able to use it to research new ways of fighting the insect race.”

So it was allowed to live.

Su Qian raised the larva.

She named it “Su Lan.”

She raised it to adulthood.

To find better ways of fighting the insect race, she began collecting its genes.

At every examination and every blood draw, he behaved himself and did as he was told.

He thought that if he did this, Su Qian would come to love him.

At last, he stood before the hive and asked her in hysterical anguish:

“Why? Why don’t you love me? If you don’t love me, why did you teach me how to love?”

He sobbed quietly.

“...My genes weren’t supposed to carry this.”
