He never expected that before he had even finished his makeup, he'd be hit with a space-time shenanigan and become Muzan right after he turned into a demon. So he seamlessly took over his predecessor's task and went looking for the Blue Spider Lily. Unfortunately, that flower was probably just something the author used to string Muzan along. In any case, he still hadn't found it by the eve of the final battle. After getting surrounded and beaten up, Muzan, who at least knew the original plot, managed to escape alive. But his strength had plummeted, and he had no choice but to fall into a deep sleep. He never expected that when he woke up... Demons had gone extinct. But the world now had things called curses.
