Chang’e was the mistress of the Moon Palace. She kept a jade rabbit and lived in the Guanghan Palace, deep within the Moon Palace. Erlang, the Holy Manifestation True Lord Yang Jian, was the celestial deity in charge of justice, renowned throughout the Three Realms. For thousands of years, Chang’e and the celestial judge had occasionally disagreed, but for the most part they stayed out of each other’s way and lived in peace. That changed after Yang Jian pinned the Third Holy Mother beneath Mount Hua. When Yang Jian wanted to punish the Third Holy Mother, Chang’e went to the Thirty-Third Heaven to fetch the Grand Supreme Elder Lord, then went straight to the Hall of Miraculous Heavens to plead for her; when Yang Jian was ordered to capture the “fiend” Chenxiang, Chang’e went to save him; when Yang Jian tried to stop Chenxiang from taking a master, Chang’e used her charms to persuade Zhu Bajie to help Chenxiang find Sun Wukong, so he could study under him without a hitch… In short, no matter what the celestial judge wanted to do to the Third Holy Mother and Chenxiang, Chang’e always opposed him.
