Cold-faced shou with yin-yang eyes and an immortal's bones x mad, unhinged charlatan with a ghost mask gong
[Human-demon love is common enough, but a romance between a god and a ghost is rare.]
Chang Ping'an, the young master of the Chang family, was born blind in one eye. With the other, he could see both the living and the dead.
In Xuanyang City, everyone avoided him as an ill-omened jinx and a ghostly menace.
Until he met a shameless charlatan who came right to his door to swindle him.
“Young Master, care for a fortune? I can see that love is in your stars, and your destined match is me.”
Chang Ping'an looked straight ahead. “Get lost.”
-
Li Jiyan prided himself on having three rules about who he would never swindle.
He would never swindle children, the insane, or Chang Ping'an.
But he was born contrary, and loved to provoke the people he shouldn't.
He had played a painted-skin ghost, posed as a fox immortal, and even snuck into the Chang family ancestral hall to steal offerings from the altar.
Again and again, he swindled Chang Ping'an.
Until the eve of their parting, when Chang Ping'an asked him with tearful eyes, “Li Jiyan, are you human or a ghost?”
“This time, don't lie to me.”
-
Chang Ping'an often wondered why his right eye couldn't go completely blind.
With his yin-yang eye, he'd witnessed a tragic romance behind a scarlet bridal veil, the love and hatred of nations in ancient paintings, and the divide between humans and demons among the incense burners for the dead.
But ghosts and humans were easy to tell apart. The human heart was not.
Even with an eye that could see both worlds, Chang Ping'an couldn't see through Li Jiyan's ingenious heart.
“In Xuanyang City, a hundred ghosts roam at night, and I blend in among them. Sometimes I wonder, are the ghosts hiding in the human world, or am I wandering between worlds?”
P.S.
1. A collection of supernatural stories with a gentle tone. A sister story to “Strange Tales of Xuanyang” and “Tales of the Strange in Changyang.” The central plot follows the cycle of cause and effect surrounding the “Longevity Stone.”
2. The gong is a complete bastard at first, genuinely unhinged in the middle, and tearfully chases his wife in the end.
3. This is a preliminary blurb and may be changed later (note left 2025.4.20).
