The land was littered with corpses, the world left in ruins. Sakai Mai fought a mutant for three hundred rounds and, following her instincts, died alongside it. When she opened her eyes, she had arrived in "peaceful" Mihua Town.
Having survived that disaster, Sakai Mai believed she could tolerate anything the world threw at her.
Even though the city's crime rate rivaled Gotham's, and people often committed crimes right in front of her because she had such a low presence... she kept her head down and made it to graduation, all for the sake of the city's delicious food.
But why was it so hard for a new graduate to find a job?!
To improve the school's employment rate, her counselor gave her a "career personality test."
"Test results: You dislike being told what to do, don't like moral constraints, and have no interest in a regular nine-to-five job. Recommended career: freelancer."
Sakai Mai studied the results and translated them into her own words.
No morals, refuses to take orders, wants to work one week and take the next off.
She immediately realized her dream job.
Become a killer!
"You want to be a killer, huh?" the counselor said with a cold laugh. "I've got your gear ready."
Sakai Mai stared at the unbearably embarrassing disguise and took half a step back, breaking into a cold sweat.
"No! This test is completely wrong! I'll work nine to five! I'm the most dedicated employee ever!!!"
Sakai Mai realized she'd been too hasty.
She wasn't that tolerant, and she wasn't that calm. She was forced to do embarrassing roleplay every day, and both the little killer Mai and her toes desperately wanted to clock out.
= Main story excerpt =
For her first job, a forum user called "Little Cat Eyes" complained that his boss kept pressuring him to do work he hated.
Sakai Mai knocked his boss out and took a photo, asking, "Is this him?"
Little Cat Eyes was horrified and told her to stop.
She could only cut off a lock of the boss's silver hair before making a regretful exit. She vowed to inspire Little Cat Eyes to cut ties with his boss once and for all.
For her second job, a forum user called "Peanut Blueberry Sandwich" complained that her sister's boyfriend was using her sister to get a job.
In the middle of a deadly sniper attack, Sakai Mai snatched Little Sandwich's sister and carried her all the way home. "Hey, miss, how about considering me? I don't need a job, just a paycheck."
The older sister patted her head. She was so gentle.
For her nth job, the cat-eyed boy she'd taken in wanted to recruit her.
"I can't get out of bed. I don't want to go to work."
Sakai Mai refused him with righteous indignation.
"I'll call you," he said, his eyes curving with a smile. "I'll make you plum wine."
Note:
1. The pairing is Hiromitsu and the catboy! I'm trying hard to keep the characters true to the original, but my writing isn't good enough, so I'm very sorry if they're out of character TAT
2. There's a tiny bit of a golden finger, just to make sure our little Mai can grow up safely in Eastern Gotham (wipes away tears).
3. A silly, sweet little story. I want to write about their happy, peaceful everyday lives.
Theme: There are many paths in life, and every one can lead to success.
