Rational Investing

[Next up: Twelve Years Before My Late Wife’s Death] [A shout-out to my friend Xia Youxin’s The Crazy Princess Is Carrying My Baby, a sweet and satisfying farming-and-card-drawing story] A new transfer student joined the class. Her name was Xie Buci, the heiress of a wealthy family: beautiful, aloof, cold, and most importantly, generous with her money. As a newcomer, the young heiress was bound to need a few loyal followers at her beck and call. That was exactly what Wen Yan was best at. She fussed over Xie Buci and looked after her in every way, remaining persistent and undeterred even when Xie Buci was distant. Then, by a twist of fate, Wen Yan gave her a cake. After a long silence, Xie Buci asked her why. Looking at Xie Buci’s reddened eyes and recalling everything that had happened between them, Wen Yan suddenly realized that the aloof heiress who seemed so cold and untouchable was, surprisingly, pure-hearted and easy to fool. She got a wicked idea. Wen Yan slowly leaned closer. As Xie Buci’s eyes widened slightly, she kissed her. “Because I like you.” * Xie Buci really was innocent and easy to fool. One kiss was enough to leave her blushing and fleeing in embarrassment. Wen Yan pretended to be upset and avoided her for a few days, and Xie Buci soon couldn’t resist coming to her herself. Once she became Xie Buci’s girlfriend, Wen Yan’s life got a lot easier. All she had to do was act a little pitiful and helpless, and Xie Buci would take the initiative to clear every obstacle out of her way. Wen Yan thought that as long as Xie Buci stayed rich and powerful, she could love her forever. But before long, the Xie family went bankrupt and Xie Buci’s father jumped from a building. The once high-and-mighty heiress became a stray dog overnight, no longer able to shower Wen Yan with money. Wen Yan walked away. When Xie Buci cornered her and demanded an explanation, she only smiled casually. “Is it so hard to understand? Haven’t you learned what rational investment means?” * Later, Xie Buci transferred schools and left. Wen Yan thought she had put Xie Buci behind her for good. Then, in her third year of college, her roommate dragged her to a lecture, and a familiar voice suddenly called her name. “Wen Yan.” Wen Yan looked up instinctively and met a pair of familiar eyes. The heiress she had once rationally invested in stood on the podium. She nudged her gold-rimmed glasses up, her tone even and her gaze inscrutable. “Please tell us what you understand by rational investment, and what experience you have with it.” . [Please note: This is not an ideal romance, and neither character is perfect. They both have flaws, do bad things, make mistakes, and hurt each other. The tags have always said this is a dramatic love triangle, not a groveling reunion. One really runs, the other really chases, and there’s truly no escape, but this isn’t a groveling-chase story. It’s an unconventional reunion after a breakup: real deception, real cruelty, real madness, and real insanity, but also true love and a happy ending.
