[Once a bachelor by choice, later a devoted wife-guy: aloof Grand Historian x A pampered, sickly beauty who is human by day and a ghost by night]
Le Changsheng is the apple of the Shangshu family's eye. Frail and sickly, she has been cherished by her whole family since birth, but her condition only worsens as she grows older. Every nightfall, she falls into an unending sleep.
In truth, Le Changsheng isn't asleep. Her soul leaves her body, and she switches between the worlds of the living and the dead. She's used this ability to scare off quite a few of the Shangshu family's rivals.
To help her father bring down the Grand Historian, Le Changsheng sneaks into Bu Zhaoge's residence, hoping to give the charlatan a good scare.
That night, she floats over and blows a cold breath into her political enemy's ear. Instead of being frightened, he pinpoints her ghostly form with uncanny precision. "Who are you?"
Faced with those yin-yang eyes that can see both the living and the dead, Le Changsheng feels that her afterlife is about to come to an end.
As if things weren't bad enough, the Shangshu family soon falls into crisis. Bu Zhaoge arrives with an imperial edict and takes advantage of their predicament, saying he wants to marry her.
Looking at his aloof, utterly unfeeling expression, Le Changsheng feels that her life is about to come to an end, too!
*
Bu Zhaoge is exceptionally gifted, mature beyond his years, and skilled in yin-yang arts and divination. He considers himself immune to love.
When ghosts haunt the imperial capital, he is ordered to investigate. His inquiries eventually lead him to the Shangshu family, the very people least fond of supernatural nonsense. Unable to secure an audience, he puts his many distinguished achievements to use and asks His Majesty for a marriage decree.
Looking at his delicate, sickly new bride, who is full of resentment, Bu Zhaoge rubs his forehead. He may have landed himself in serious trouble.
But as time passes, he starts to think that this troublesome half-human, half-ghost might actually be rather interesting.
Later still, the man who had spent half his life in lonely aloofness kneels at every ancient monastery on Spirit Mountain, making just one wish.
May she live a long life.
[Little Scene]
On their wedding night, Bu Zhaoge sends Le Changsheng to the small bed beside his and tells her, "As long as you behave, you can wander wherever you like within the capital at night."
One night after their marriage, she goes out as usual at midnight. But she sees the soul-guarding lamp by the door swaying gently. A man holds a ghost-subduing talisman between his fingers, smiling as warmly as spring. "It's the middle of the night. If you're not climbing into my bed, where are you going, Madam?"
