[Blurb]
More than ten years ago, there were two genius boys at an orphanage in Beika Town, Tokyo. One was named Dazai, and the other Ranpo. Later, they were adopted by different people.
One of them was taken in by a witch rumored to have a thousand faces. He grew up in an organization woven from black and crows, but after coming of age, he resolutely ran off to Japan's police force to work undercover as a cop. This infuriated the silver-haired killer who was his childhood friend and was bent on correcting his brash personality, sending murderous intent surging through the air.
Yet nearly every officer at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department who knew him couldn't praise him enough for his abilities. By the time everyone came to their senses, the genius officer, who called himself a sweets lover and the world's greatest detective, had already claimed the highest honor of being known as the "pride of the Japanese police." For a while, he was unrivaled in the spotlight.
The other was adopted by an ordinary Tokyo family and should have led an utterly unremarkable life. But in elementary school, he inexplicably met two childhood friends: one whose family's auto repair shop went bankrupt, leaving him swinging between cheerfulness and depression all day; and another whose innocent father was framed as a murderer by the Superintendent General of the police, causing him to miss an important competition. He never recovered, and spent his days drinking. Meanwhile, he himself was trapped in an endless cycle of bullying and fighting back against it. These two idiots shattered the life of a certain gloomy blob, which should have been as still as a dead pond, and dragged him without a word of protest into the police academy, a training ground that was practically a warehouse for every kind of human being.
So the trouble-averse drowning enthusiast and bandage-wasting contraption, who had no desire to become a tool for mediating bizarre disputes, applied without hesitation for a secret assignment with the National Police Agency's Public Security Bureau. He went off to play a proud undercover fake liquor salesman in a certain black organization, where he quickly made a name for himself.
N years later, the two had separately gone undercover and become the BOSS and a high-ranking official in each other's respective systems. Red and Black insiders tacitly brought them together as a couple (crossed out), praising them as the "twin flowers of the police world" and the "twin pillars of the organization." The two stared at each other in disbelief.
--So the Red and Black sides really did take the wrong kids back then because they had no taste... No, wait, they mixed up our factions, didn't they?!
◆ Before You Read:
* My take on Ranpo is a pseudo-Black-side character, and my take on Dazai is a pseudo-Red-side character. Ranpo is a genuine liquor in the distillery but watered down, while Dazai is a Red-side undercover agent with a streak of gloom. At their core, both are chaotic neutral people who don't care about which side they're on. Their personalities may be OOC.
("Chaotic neutral" means acting according to one's own wishes, being a complete individualist who values personal freedom but isn't willing to stand up for anyone else's.)
* Once again, this is a parallel-world setting with no supernatural abilities, no System, and no transmigration. A crossover with Bungo Stray Dogs, but a Detective Conan fanfic.
* In my version, Ranpo, Dazai, Gin, and the five members of the police academy group are all the same age, but Ranpo graduated from the academy a year before the others.
* The ending is tentatively set to a surface-level draw between Red and Black, but the organization gets a thorough shake-up. Gin and Vermouth survive, and Dazai rises through the ranks as an undercover agent to become the BOSS.
* Two male leads and two POVs. The couple is the two pillars of the Armed Detective Agency: Dazai x Ranpo. The romance is sparse and will most likely be in the extras. In the main story, enjoy watching "how two clever people make the difficult transition from mutually exploitative partners to something more than friends but not quite lovers."
* The author's intelligence is not the same as the characters' intelligence. Beware of plot holes. To get ahead of things, here's a brain-deposit spot for all readers (jpg, survival instincts at maximum).
