What does it feel like to die and come back to life?
If you asked Mielle, she would certainly say, "Better off dead."
She wasn't lucky enough to bathe in the springs of Lazarus Pit, and she didn't have a body that could resist decay. Even her coffin was shoddily made, barely big enough to fit her curled-up body.
"What a shame, dying just like that." The spindly white skeleton dangling her legs over a low wall spoke lightly to the blue bird that had fallen from the sky, her voice almost like singing.
"What a shame," Mielle said to the living person in front of her, reaching out an arm. Nothing could be read in her dark, hollow eye sockets. She raised her skull and slowly stood. "I'm not some villain bent on destroying the peace. I'm just an ordinary young woman from Gotham who came back to life by accident. As ordinary as they come."
The skeleton and soul resurrected by magic had a shelf life of only three months. Mielle moved her body a little, then jumped down from the low wall, her thoughts returning to that afternoon... and those blue eyes she would never forget.
The weather was lovely that day.
