Career first | Clear-headed beauty x carefree playboy at first, devoted puppy chasing his ex later
Zhou Xianshu and Yan Zhi were a university couple, the kind everyone envied.
The Zhou family was rich, and Zhou Xianshu was their only daughter and heir to a fortune worth billions.
When she started her freshman year, she fell in love at first sight with Yan Zhi, a junior. She pursued her passionately, pulling out every extravagant, money-no-object romantic gesture, and eventually won her over.
Then came their very public displays of affection. In just one month, Zhou Xianshu showered Yan Zhi with all kinds of luxury goods she had never even seen before, using money to build her a dream of living among the rich.
But in truth, Yan Zhi knew Zhou Xianshu didn't love her that much.
That became especially clear when Yan Zhi learned that Zhou Xianshu had only pursued her because of a drunken bet. She accepted financial support from Zhou Xianshu's mother and flew to London to continue her studies.
Later, she heard that Zhou Xianshu had drunk herself into a stupor. When the long-distance call came, Yan Zhi was in an English tutoring session.
Without changing her expression, she hung up, then politely gestured to her tutor. "Please continue."
Five years later, she returned to China and attended a company meeting as the president's secretary at Zhou Group.
It was her first time appearing before so many senior executives. Until then, they had only heard her voice during long-distance meetings.
The newly appointed president of Zhou Group looked furious. After the meeting ended, everyone hurried out. Yan Zhi gathered her documents and turned to leave, too.
But just as she reached the door, the new president swept her documents to the floor, pinned her against the meeting room door with red-rimmed eyes, and demanded to know why she had suddenly disappeared without even telling her they were breaking up.
Yan Zhi's eyes held no emotion. She even ordered her, "Let go. You're hurting me."
Seeing the red marks spreading across Yan Zhi's wrist, the other woman let go in a panic, but stubbornly kept demanding to know why she had vanished.
Fed up with listening, Yan Zhi slapped her. As the other woman clutched her reddening cheek and began to cry, Yan Zhi said coldly:
"Zhou Xianshu, haven't you grown up yet?"
"Are plane tickets to Britain really that expensive? So expensive that you couldn't save up for one in five years to come see me?"
