Male sentinel, female guide. The male lead pursues his wife after losing her.
Like other sentinels and guides, Lou Yuting and Chu Shuo were paired under orders from the White Tower.
Lou Yuting thought she was lucky. Her partner, Chu Shuo, was an outstanding top-tier guide from a noble family. For someone like her, a sentinel from humble origins, he was clearly "settling."
Lou Yuting thought she was despicable. She knew Chu Shuo had someone else in his heart, his unrequited love. Unfortunately, that person was an ordinary human. Taking advantage of her status as a sentinel, she had "stolen" Chu Shuo from them.
Under the White Tower's laws, neither guides nor sentinels could bond with ordinary people. And even someone as unyielding as Chu Shuo had no choice but to submit to bonding heat and the White Tower.
But after the insect invasion ended, the White Tower was disbanded, the old laws abolished and new ones established. All their "good fortune" vanished.
She and Chu Shuo divorced.
On the day of their divorce, Lou Yuting said goodbye to Chu Shuo in the White Tower Park.
Lou Yuting: Congratulations. You can finally pursue your own happiness.
Chu Shuo gave a faint smile. Without a word of farewell, he turned and ran toward the freedom that was his, without a trace of reluctance.
They both returned to where they were meant to be. Chu Shuo remained China's number one guide and a general, while Lou Yuting resigned from her senior colonel post and gave up the chance to become a major general. She became an inconspicuous patrol squad leader, keeping watch over the buffer zone and living a quiet life farming.
No one expected Chu Shuo to regret it, while Lou Yuting had let go.
When the insect plague returned, the White Tower reopened, and the two were summoned to meet again in White Tower Park. Chu Shuo looked at the lover he hadn't seen in so long, his eyes reddening.
Chu Shuo: I miss you, every moment. Let's get back together.
This time, Lou Yuting was the one who smiled.
Lou Yuting: No.

Reader's guide:
1. The male lead is stronger than the female lead, so he holds a higher rank. The two are forcibly paired based on their sentinel-guide compatibility.
2. A mix of romance and plot, with the male lead chasing his wife after losing her. The female lead puts in more effort at first.
