Xie Yili (top) x Gu Yun (bottom)
A reserved, voice-loving esports great and his wealthy, gullible boss × a well-behaved, easily flustered team manager with a dirty mouth and many faces, who also works as a male college-student gaming companion
The once-glorious JXG team had fallen on hard times. Their only promising academy marksman was full of himself and threw a fit for a raise. When it didn't work, he ran off with the lovesick team manager.
So they brought in a temp manager. He was articulate, knew every competition inside and out, and quickly got along with the team. He was also handsome, rosy-cheeked, and full of youthful energy. There was just one problem: behind the boss's back, he'd sing his praises, but to his face, he'd clam up and blush.
Gu Yun defended his teasing with complete conviction: “A male god is meant to be worshiped!”
UNG.Cili, a plain and unassuming ID, was once the darling of the early esports scene.
He shot to prominence as a jungler after the age restriction was lifted, and won a grand slam within a year. He seemed destined to become the scene's greatest legend, but the next year he was in a car accident and injured his hand. With no choice but to step back from the front lines, he founded JXG and became its owner.
Viewers who got into esports later might not have even heard of him.
Even when other players came along who were every bit as astonishing, Gu Yun still considered him his one true idol.
But the person who recommended Gu Yun for the emergency temp-manager position hadn't told him that the big boss would be conducting interviews in person!
Faced with his idol's handsome, composed face, Gu Yun's first words came out in a stammer. He turned “Cili” into “eat you,” and was so mortified his face turned as pink as a peach.
Though he managed to save the interview afterward, he still thought his part-time job was doomed.
Perhaps because they were short-staffed, or for some other unknown reason, Gu Yun ended up joining JXG after all.
What Gu Yun didn't know was that when the person recommending him told Xie Yili about him, they said he was good at everything, then hemmed and hawed and tried to downplay it before finally adding, “The thing is, this kid really likes you.”
That was enough to pique Xie Yili's interest. He made a point of meeting Gu Yun in person, and even after realizing what kind of “like” it was, he still kept him on.
Gu Yun liked to joke that he and his idol brought each other good luck.
Ever since he joined JXG, the team's record had soared. The management knew he was short on money, so they gave him a monthly raise of 2,000 and allowed him to take other part-time jobs as long as they didn't interfere with his work as team manager.
With his career thriving, his gaming-companion side gig also landed him a reserved, rich boss who communicated only by text. The first time, the boss ordered hundreds of sessions, then offered to sponsor him. Best of all, the boss carried him through every game!
The boss had just two flaws. He seemed to have a possessive streak a mile wide: first, he threw money at Gu Yun to stop him from taking anyone else's orders. Second, he dragged Gu Yun's idol into the conversation and asked who was better.
As if there were any question. In Gu Yun's heart, his idol was the greatest of all time.
Then Gu Yun's secret was exposed.
At seven in the morning, he was feverish but determined, calling another client to wake him up with his sweet, gentle voice: “Baby, time to get up.”
Just then, the dorm room door opened. Xie Yili, his boss, stood there holding breakfast and fever medicine, staring at him strangely. He'd clearly heard everything he wasn't supposed to.
Gu Yun curled his toes against the floor, wishing he could bury himself beneath the bed.
Then he watched, wide-eyed, as his idol pulled out his phone. At the same time, a message arrived from the boss he'd saved as “Gullible Rich Guy” in the app:
“Baby, time to get up?”
Gu Yun: …
