The Duke's Mansion Kitchen

My new book, "Delivering Takeout by Carriage in the Nineteenth Century," is now available. Welcome to read it~ Lin Xingyue, a private chef, transmigrates into another world. The original body's father died young, her mother is a compulsive gambler, the roof leaks whenever it rains, and the kitchen where she works churns out dark cuisine every day. On her first day, she lifts the pot lid and is nearly knocked out by the smell. Lin Xingyue: ...For the sake of my own stomach, I'd better work hard! The Duke's mansion has three kitchen tiers: the top kitchen prepares soups and meals for the Old Madam, the main kitchen cooks for the men and women of the household, and the lowest-ranked small kitchen prepares meals for the servants. The maids and footmen are busy from morning to night, but the meals they are given make people shake their heads. Either the brown rice is so hard it hurts their teeth, or the vegetable soup is bland and tasteless. At first, the maids and older servants look down on the food prepared by a girl who does odd jobs in the small kitchen. They won't even give it a taste. But later, whenever they have time, the maids and older servants gather together to gossip over snacks, and all they talk about is the food Lin Xingyue makes. "That Miss Lin had the nerve to use pork in her cooking. That meat is so gamey, who would eat it? The stable boys even made a bet that none of them would touch the pork braised in wine. In the end, though, they'd rather give up their betting money than stop eating it. It smelled so good they were still talking about it in their sleep at midnight." "Miss Lin has the day off today, so the food from the small kitchen is back to how it used to be. Everyone's hoping she'll come back soon. They even fought over all the pickled vegetables and fermented bean curd she made." "Madam Liang, who serves the Lady of the house, actually came to the small kitchen! Miss Lin made sticky rice dates, and they were so good that Madam Liang's face softened. The scariest part is that in the middle of the night, the Lady of the house sent the Master away, shut the door, and ate a whole bowl herself!" "The mansion has a distinguished guest, and the Old Madam specifically asked Miss Lin to prepare food. I heard the guest praised it to no end, and even took a jar of purple crab sauce along when they left, saying they'd eat it with white rice later. The Old Madam was so pleased, she couldn't stop smiling." A slice-of-life food story.
