The delicate, stunning Qin Baoxi had a dream in which she was the cannon-fodder wife of a male lead in a period novel, destined to die young.
In the book, she had a tall, handsome, highly capable fiance. But her fiance, Xie Zhengyan, had a short life. Before she could even join the Xie family, he died on a mission.
She thought the marriage agreement between their families would be canceled, but her fiance's family decided that since she had no one to rely on anyway, they might as well carry the engagement over to their younger son, Xie Luli, who was also the male lead of the book.
Xie Luli hated the idea of arranged marriage in this modern age. He hated that his parents always handed him things his older brother didn't want, and he hated having no control over his own life.
To gain his freedom, he pretended to agree to marry Qin Baoxi. After the wedding, he planned to use her inability to adjust to the northern climate as an excuse to take her south. He had already worked out that once they arrived, he would explain everything and divorce her amicably.
He would stay behind to start a business, and she would be free again.
But on the way, they were caught in a torrential rainstorm and a landslide. Their car was swept off a cliff. Qin Baoxi died on the spot, while Xie Luli survived but lost the use of one leg.
He was overcome with regret, but his stubborn determination drove him to continue south with Qin Baoxi's ashes. In the end, he became a famous business tycoon, while Qin Baoxi was reduced to a handful of ashes he could never bring back.
After waking from the dream, Qin Baoxi was incredibly grateful. Thank goodness she'd had that dream, or she wouldn't even have known how she died. She resolved to stay far away from the Xie brothers. A childhood engagement? What era was this? She didn't have to go through with it!
But when she opened her eyes, she found herself already lying in a bed in the Xie family's guest room.
Qin Baoxi: ...
Xie Zhengyan came from a privileged family and was highly capable. He was the golden boy in everyone's eyes, and the ideal son-in-law in the eyes of many.
But he had a childhood fiancee, and everyone assumed that a man like him would surely reject such an arrangement. Who could have guessed that not only did Xie Zhengyan accept it, he was crazy about her?
Every day, he worked tirelessly to distinguish himself, waiting for his little sweetheart to come of age and marry him so he could give her a safe, peaceful life.
Then, just as he was counting down the days until she was supposed to come find him, Xie Zhengyan had a dream. Because of a mistake in the information they received, news of his comrade's death reached his family, and the woman he wanted to cherish was forced to marry his younger brother at the worst possible time.
That bastard not only failed to protect her, he let her die young. By the time Xie Zhengyan returned home, it was too late.
When Xie Zhengyan woke up, he immediately filed for leave and drove home through the night to grab Xie Luli and punch him hard.
Xie Luli had a dream too. He dreamed that his selfishness had caused Qin Baoxi's death. When he woke, all he could hear in his head was Qin Baoxi crying and begging him to take her home. He broke out in a cold sweat and immediately decided to follow his parents' wishes, stay behind, marry Qin Baoxi, and take good care of her for the rest of her life.
But before he could tell Qin Baoxi what he had decided, a powerful force dragged him out of bed, and then he was hit hard.
Xie Luli was about to fight back when someone turned on the light. He saw his older brother, who had supposedly died, standing beside him. Overcome with excitement and surprise, he asked, "Big Brother, you're alive?"
Xie Zhengyan: Hah? Hoping I'd die? Dream on!
Qin Baoxi thought breaking off the engagement would be easy. But when she woke up and saw the two men standing beside her, she realized things had gotten even more complicated.
