On her seventeenth birthday, Yu Wan learned two things:
The person staying at their home, who was better than her at everything, was her father's illegitimate child. Her parents were fighting bitterly over it and on the verge of divorce.
The perfect life she'd seemed to have was stripped of every last pretense. The filth hidden beneath its glittering surface was laid bare for everyone to see. Yu Wan couldn't accept it. She was resentful and furious, and cried bitterly, yet there was nothing she could do. All she could do was take it out on the boy who was two months older than her and call him her brother.
At school, Song Zhao was the perfect student everyone admired: excellent grades, sunny and cheerful, with impeccable character. Yu Wan, on the other hand, was the haughty rich girl everyone disliked, spoiled, willful, and solitary. No one knew how Yu Wan bullied Song Zhao in private.
She claimed the moral high ground and felt entitled to make her brother compensate her for the life she'd lost.
And Song Zhao, like a saint, put up with every unreasonable tantrum Yu Wan threw. He was so perfect, he seemed unreal, and he never got angry.
Until one day, Yu Wan had a dream.
It turned out she was in a book. Song Zhao was the male lead, while she was the wicked supporting female character who bullied him when he was down.
Worst of all, she wasn't her father's daughter either.
Back then, her mother had been pregnant and abandoned. Relying on her family's influence, she'd forced Yu Wan's father to marry her. He gave up his lover and married into the Sang family, enduring it all until his career took off and he finally decided to break things off with her mother.
By now, they had signed the divorce papers and were just waiting to make it public a month later.
No one wanted her.
She was the remnant of her mother's failed romance, the proof of her father's humiliating marriage into the Sang family. Her tragic fate had been set from the very beginning.
It had nothing to do with anyone else.
Once Yu Wan understood this, she bullied Song Zhao even more. If she was going to be the wicked supporting female character anyway, she might as well ruin everything from the start.
Even after learning where fate could have diverged, she stubbornly smashed every opportunity and refused to bow to the chosen one.
But when her parents really did announce their divorce, Yu Wan came to her senses and chose to apply to a university in another city, escaping it all.
Only after moving away and preparing to start a new life did Yu Wan realize something was wrong.
The men she developed feelings for never went anywhere. The friends she'd just made turned around and avoided her. Even things kept disappearing from her rented room every few days.
It wasn't until Yu Wan woke in the middle of the night and found a familiar figure sitting by her bed, while her hands were tightly bound to a pillar, that she finally understood: some things had strayed from their course.
Half of Song Zhao's face was hidden in darkness, the other half bathed in pure moonlight. His perfect fake smile was still in place, but his voice was cold. "Aren't you supposed to feel guilty toward me? Then why did you leave me alone in hell while you turned around and went off to live a normal life?"
