A Famous Physician in the Northern Song Dynasty

Xu Yi was born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. After eight years of study, he had finally become a doctor, only to transmigrate to the Northern Song dynasty.

Unlike his comfortable modern family, with loving parents and siblings who got along,

from the start, all he had was:

A thatched hut, a dog, and himself.

In this unfamiliar era, Xu Yi became a teenager whose family fortune had been spent and whose parents had died of illness.

His house was completely bare. He had only a few dozen copper coins to his name. Forget continuing his studies: if he didn't find a way to make a living, he would soon starve.

What else could he do? Return to his old profession and become a doctor in the Northern Song.

PS: This is the story of a farmer's son in a fictional version of the Northern Song, making his own way with what he has learned and contributing a brick to the traditional Chinese medicine he loves.

Note 1: The characters are original, not historical figures. The setting is the early Northern Song, though it draws on both the Northern and Southern Song, with many fictional additions.

Note 2: The author is not a professional. The traditional Chinese medicine content comes from books and Baidu Baike. Please don't treat it as real medical advice.

Note 3: There is a modest ensemble cast. The female lead appears later.

Note 4: Details and errors may be corrected from time to time. Any additions will be noted later.

The Peddler's Path to the Imperial Exams

After transmigrating, Liu Hua became the eldest son of a peddler.

As a teenager, he was expected to inherit the family business in its third generation and become a young peddler.

During his apprenticeship, market days came every five days. Before dawn, Liu Hua had to help his father prepare their shoulder poles, walk mountain paths, and hawk their wares at the market.

Or he would wander the streets and alleys, carrying goods on foot for dozens of kilometers, working from dawn to dusk to earn a few pieces of silver through backbreaking labor.

If he had to get up before dawn either way, he might as well improve his living conditions and take the imperial exams.

Liu Hua thought studying offered better value for his effort.

From having nothing to becoming an imperial exam star, Liu Hua simply put in an exceedingly, exceedingly, exceedingly little bit more effort.
