Meining has just been driven out by a king who worships a heathen religion. He returns to Kent, and before he can even put down his luggage, soldiers from a neighboring country reach the monastery gates, ready to separate the bishop's head from his body.
Meining manages to hold them off for three whole seconds before they break in.
But they're reinforcements.
They're led by the second prince of the Kingdom of Wessex, its youngest, most handsome, and bravest warrior.
The noble young prince kills the neighboring soldiers with a few thrusts of his sword. Then he lifts Meining's face with its bloodied tip and announces coldly, “I want you to come back to Wessex with me and be my consort.”
Trembling, Meining reads in the dying bishop's eyes: “We monks specialize in controlling beasts. We should be defending our homeland and serving the people.”
Meining climbs onto the back of the young prince's white horse.
Along the way, he watches the neighboring soldiers trample his homeland, passes through the peaceful countryside on the outskirts of Wessex, and arrives in the city center: the prosperous steampunk capital of Wessex.
The second prince issues an unequivocal order: “Within two years, I want you to make the lands I've reclaimed as prosperous as Wessex.”
So when the second prince says “consort,” he means he expects Meining to pull off in two years the agricultural and industrial revolutions that took centuries to complete...!
