Qi Chong has been dreaming lately that he's turned into a bug, with a bird always chasing him in his dreams.

The bird doesn't eat him, just torments him. Every time Qi Chong wakes up, he's left dazed for a long while.

Maybe it was because he kept having the dream, but one day after work, when he got home and entered his apartment, he spotted a sparrow on his windowsill.

The sparrow tilted its head with its beady eyes. The moment it lifted a foot, Qi Chong froze. That feeling of being turned over and over came rushing back.

Shu Que has been dreaming a lot lately, too. In his dreams, he's a bird. He can't remember much about the setting, only that there's always a ladybug in them.

The bug is especially fun to tease. The moment it sees him, it runs away on all its little legs, stumbling and crawling. As soon as he touches it, it retracts its feelers into its shell and pretends to be dead.

The dreams feel so adorable that they've reminded him of the days he spent teasing ladybugs in the countryside as a child.

After having the dream again and again, he opened his eyes one day and found that his field of vision had widened. No, he had gotten smaller. Before he could react, Qi Chong appeared in front of him.

Their eyes met, and they stared at each other. Qi Chong's reaction reminded him of the ladybug in his dream, spreading its wings to try to escape. The spots on its wings were neat and vivid.

The man and the bird settle into a routine of meeting at night and parting in the morning. Qi Chong increasingly feels like he has PTSD from this bird. Otherwise, why would he get nervous every time their eyes meet?

Shu Que, meanwhile, notices that Qi Chong avoids him during the day, and even hides in a corner when he sees him at night. He can't make heads or tails of it.

After they learn they share dreams...

Shu Que is confused, Shu Que understands, Shu Que grins with his beak open.

He spreads his wings to tease Qi Chong, but then his beak plunges into Qi Chong's hair. The world spins before his eyes, and Shu Que, completely naked, lands squarely on top of Qi Chong.

Without his feathers, Shu Que feels exposed. He scrambles onto the bed and wraps himself tightly in the blanket.

The smile doesn't disappear, it just moves onto Qi Chong's face.

1. I came up with the seven-spotted ladybug and sparrow setup on 2026.1.22, based on a dream I had last night. There was a little bug in the dream. I remember it very clearly, and there was a bird too. I've forgotten what happened, but I remember their interactions were incredibly cute, so I couldn't resist starting this story in a burst of enthusiasm. Pure enthusiasm!
