Miai is currently the lowest-ranked Sentinel, and was formerly an elite Guide. He has a sunny, approachable appearance, but his spirit animal is unexpectedly sinister: chains and a collar.
He disguises himself as a Sentinel to slack off outside, but then runs into a group of kidnappers. After a chase, he's hit by a tranquilizer dart and jumps off a building to escape.
Just before he loses consciousness completely, he sees Kai, the newly appointed Chief Sentinel.
"You're safe now," says the notorious new Chief.

Why did Miai go from being an elite Guide to the lowest-ranked Sentinel?
His first Sentinel went berserk.
"White Tower": No problem. We'll pair you with someone better.
His second Sentinel was the most promising former Chief, and he went berserk too.
"White Tower": It's fine. He has a cousin.
His third Sentinel was a god among gods: he stole concentrated military-grade Guide pheromones and ran off!
"White Tower": ...Now everyone suspects you're a Dark Guide.
Miai: That's right.
Miai: So, can I leave?

There are few Guides, so leaving isn't really an option. Someone has to do the work. The "White Tower" gives Miai this year's "atonement coupon" assignment:

- Member 1: Kai, the new Chief Sentinel, with a terrible reputation. Rumor has it he caused the former Chief's serious injury, and now it seems he's trying to capture the former Chief's cousin.

Once he begins providing mental guidance to Kai, Miai's peaceful life is repeatedly thrown into chaos:
For the first time in his life, he goes to an auction house, but as the item being auctioned.
A mysterious Sentinel buys him for a high price, but only takes Miai by the hand and walks with him for a while. After listening to him talk about Kai's scandalous past, the mysterious Sentinel sends him back to the light.
For the first time in his life, he goes into a mating heat, but his mental sea is heavily polluted.
Miai unconsciously invades the mental seas of every Sentinel, and the mysterious Sentinel appears again.
Somehow, his mating heat subsides. Once he comes to, Miai is bombarded with messages from the Guide administrator: Which rogue Sentinel did you mentally bond with? How could you be so careless?
Miai: ...I have no idea.
For the first time in his life, he goes to sea, though fortunately in the literal sense.
Inside the sunken Jinjiang No. 1, Miai reads Kai's past and accidentally sees the explosive scene of a teenage Kai going crazy over a photo of his first love.
Miai: Kai's got good taste. His first love looks like me, and they're good-looking.
Miai: ...
Miai: Wait, what?!

Preparations complete. Guidance begins.
When Miai sees a [brain] with octopus tentacles in Kai's mental sea, he begins to understand the Guide administrator's intentions.
...But that doesn't mean he can accept being kidnapped, put up for auction, sent to jail, forced through an island-survival Ironman triathlon, and turned into the master of the sea turtle soup guessing game!
Isn't this too much for a Guide?
Wait a second, aren't Guides supposed to be rare and precious?

Most characters are cognitively advanced New Humans, and their official ages are only meant to correspond to their appearances. For some characters with extensive life experience, you may add 5 to 10 years to their official ages to approximate their age in modern society. For example, people nowadays typically earn their doctorates at around 27 to 30, but Sentinels in this story skip six years of middle and high school, so they graduate with doctorates between 21 and 24.
