[Blurb provisional]
When Wei Hou was young, he enlisted in Jizhou. There, he became as close as a brother to Gao Cen, the commandant's son. One day, he suddenly asked him, "Xiao Gao, would you like a little sister?"
Ten-year-old Gao Cen's eyes lit up. "Sure! Do you have one? Our family could use a little sister."
Delighted by Gao Cen's reaction, Wei Hou led over a scrawny little girl and put her in his hands. "Her name is Pei Zhi. She's a year younger than you, so she'll be your little sister from now on."
Pei Zhi's face was frosty. She glared at him and said through clenched teeth, "Don't you dare regret this."
Gao Cen stared in shock at the twig-thin little hand in his palm, his heart overflowing with pity.
After Wei Hou had made a name for himself and carved out a territory of his own, Gao Cen and Pei Zhi had grown up, too.
One day, the spirited young general came to visit. Looking bashful, he said, "Brother, I don't want Xiao Zhi to be my little sister anymore..."
Wei Hou raised an eyebrow. "Why not?"
"I want to marry her," the young man said shyly.
Wei Hou exploded with anger. "You little brat, you dare set your sights on my wife?"
Gao Cen was baffled. "But she's your sister..."
Wei Hou rolled his eyes. "I picked her up on the road."
"But why do you share a surname?" Gao Cen pressed on.
"I took her surname," Wei Hou said irritably.
"And your names, one means beginning and the other means end..." Gao Cen still refused to give up.
"Zhi came first, then Wei," Wei Hou said awkwardly. "Back then, I fell out with my family and swore I'd make my own way in the world. Of course I couldn't use my real name. She lent me her surname and gave me a new name. I guess it meant starting over."
Gao Cen's heart shattered. He wanted to cry, but had no tears. Had he spent all these years helping someone else win the girl?
**
When Wei Hou came to Jizhou at fourteen, he had an old horse and a frail orphan girl with him. He told everyone that their parents had died, and that their brother and sister-in-law couldn't stand them, so he'd had to bring his little sister out to make a living.
By nature, he was wild, generous, and chivalrous. He was extremely popular among the young people of Wei Commandery, and even the commandant's son followed his lead.
Gao Cen came from a wealthy family, and his parents and relatives were all kind and benevolent. Unable to bear the thought of his little sister sharing his hardships, he placed her in the care of the Gao family. He never expected it would earn him a lasting grudge.
Pei Zhi was never kind to him again. She was quick to lash out, capricious and willful, and her temper grew ever more volatile.
Wei Hou was both heartbroken and helpless. Just thinking about her gave him a headache, and he told everyone he needed to save up more for her dowry because he was afraid no one would marry her.
He never imagined that Pei Zhi would change so much as she grew up, and that even without a dowry, suitors would be lining up at the Gao family's door.
The male lead is tsundere, the female lead is emotionally tangled, and the second male lead is a traditional, gentle, devoted man. The plot has plenty of twists, melodrama, and bittersweet thrills. The heroine is the hero's one and only, but the hero is only the heroine's final destination.
The neighboring story, Spring's End, takes place in a parallel world and shares the setting and background. No rebirth. Read with caution if that's not your thing!!!
