In a wasteland era plagued by pollution, Wen Huaijing awakens as a Guide, a rare and precious type.
She's only Grade B, but her mental form is overwhelming and her treatment methods are so brutal that every Sentinel who enters her treatment room is carried out flat on their back, unable to get up for ten days to half a month.
Before long, no Sentinel is willing to enter her treatment room voluntarily.
The White Tower doesn't support idlers. Her superior gives Wen Huaijing two options:
Either enter a marriage match and have children to repay the Empire for raising her,
or serve for three years on the bitterly cold border. She can't return to the capital unless she gets promoted.
Everyone knows the capital is the safest place. A Guide needs a lot of money to get promoted, and Wen Huaijing is a penniless orphan...
Wen Huaijing: Um, I'll choose border service.
Her superior: ?

The Northern Frontier is vast and sparsely populated, and strange species often appear there. The townspeople assume the new Guide will be heading back home within three months.
But on her first day, the young Guide hauls back an iron-armored boar.
On the second day, she comes back from the black market with a bag of gold coins.
On the third day, she forcibly gives every Sentinel a mental tune-up.
On the fourth day, every Sentinel is bowing at the young Guide's feet.
By day N, the young Guide has become the youngest S-rank Guide on the Northern Frontier.
Her superior: ? Is it too late to take back the appointment?
-
On her way to her new post, Wen Huaijing finds a poor little dog.
Its fur is matted, its wounds are deep enough to show bone, and it blinks its grape-black eyes at her, once, then again.
Wen Huaijing: ...Should I try raising it?
Once clean, the little dog is loyal and adorable. It protects her with its life in battle, obediently guards the foot of her bed every night, and is perfectly content with a pat on the head.
Until one morning, Wen Huaijing trips over someone's solid thigh.
A young, handsome Sentinel sits up and catches her steadily. His grape-black eyes blink at her, once, then again. "Miss, who are you?"
Wen Huaijing blurts out, "I'm your owner."
The Sentinel's ears turn red as blood, but he obediently bends down. "I'll be good, Master."
