1. When Qin Wu was sixteen, her mother sent her to a small town in the south without giving her a choice.
The girl had delicate, beautiful features and such a pure, lovely face that people couldn’t take their eyes off her. Even her little leather shoes were decorated with lustrous pearls. She stepped out of a black car, completely out of place on the simple old street.
The first time she met Pei Rang, he was leaning carelessly against his motorcycle. He deliberately dirtied the white cotton socks with lace trim that she wore.
Yet this little princess from Beicheng had an astonishingly sweet temper.
The very next day, she showed up at Pei Rang’s door with a bowl of steaming taro dumplings. Her almond-shaped eyes shone as she said, in a voice sweeter than red bean rice cakes, “Big Brother, my grandma made taro dumplings and asked me to bring you some to try.”
Pei Rang gave a derisive laugh and said arrogantly, “Just leave them there.”
That night, Pei Rang spent half the night with an upset stomach.
Turns out the rice cakes were filled with sesame: sweet on the outside, wicked on the inside.
He licked his lips and smirked. This meant war.
2. Pei Rang of Lichuan High School was unruly and defiant, a law unto himself. Everyone in Gusu Town feared him.
At first, he couldn’t care less about the little princess who had just transferred from Beicheng. He’d snap at her in a cold, vicious tone at the drop of a hat: “Stay away from me.”
Then one night, his buddies went out to hang around and spotted a familiar figure at the end of the street. They all stopped in their tracks.
The boy had a little girl following behind him, a head shorter than he was. Afraid of the dark, she clutched the hem of their boss’s shirt and said softly, “Rangrang, slow down. I can barely keep up.”
Rangrang?
His buddies felt chills crawl over their scalps. With their boss’s awful temper, he was bound to lose it and beat her up.
Instead, they watched the tall, shameless troublemaker obediently slow down, then bend over to tie the little girl’s shoelace.
“...”
What the hell? Was the world turning upside down?
3. On the day Qin Wu left town, she didn’t get to see Pei Rang one last time.
She never knew that night Pei Rang stood outside her home in the rain, smoking dejectedly, his eyes red at the corners. He stayed there in silence all night, looking more defeated than anyone had ever seen him.
