Spring Sunlight in the Snow

Chen Mengyang loved someone when she was young.

His hands had once clumsily learned to cook for her, and under the lamplight he had patiently taught her how to solve problems. He had taken her by the hand and run with her through the narrow alleys late at night, and he had once smashed in the head of her biological father without a second thought.

When she was fifteen, he was about to leave on a long trip. Chen Mengyang reluctantly tugged at his sleeve. The boy let out a brief laugh and reached up to pluck a fallen leaf from her hair.

"Don't worry. I'll be back soon."

He paused, then added, "When I get back, I have something very important to tell you."

Then he left and never came back.

She never imagined they would meet again.

They reunited twelve years later. A nurse hurriedly pushed a hospital bed between them. The bloodstained wheels scraped across the tiles with a grating sound, while their overlapping reflections appeared in the half-open glass door.

The man in a white coat held out his hand to her, smiling gently and politely.

"Miss Chen?"

He said his surname was Wen, and that he was her husband's attending physician.
