The first minute Suzy Scamander held her wand, Garrick Ollivander offered her some advice for the rest of her life: Don't hesitate.

But she wasn't decisive at all. She hesitated for one second and met James Potter, who was going to go on adventures with her as soon as term began. She hesitated for two seconds and nearly got caught by Filch in the first week of school. She hesitated for three seconds, and James Potter and Sirius Black, who had just saved her from detention, were about to drag her into their schemes!

"Do you know where the kitchens are? Do you know about werewolves? Can you hide my Invisibility Cloak? Want to learn to become an Animagus? Want to get detention in the Forbidden Forest? Is this your beetle?" James asked.

"Have you found Sirius yet? Why is the candy hopping around in my mouth? Want to get back to the Hufflepuff Common Room early? Want to go to the ball with me? Do you like puppies? Do you like black dogs?" Sirius asked.

She hesitated for four seconds, and Suzy Scamander, who loved every Fantastic Beast equally, answered yes to Sirius Black's last question. She hesitated for five seconds, and Sirius led her by the hand onto the dance floor, even though she stepped on his foot seven times in one dance. She hesitated for six seconds, and she became Lily's bridesmaid. The bouquet she tossed just happened to land in Suzy's arms. She hesitated for seven seconds, and Sirius Black said goodbye to his beloved's blue eyes, taking the blame for killing his friend and disappearing forever.

In the eighth second, she decided she would hesitate no longer.

The day Suzy Scamander, a Hufflepuff, became Sirius Black's last-minute dance partner, she stepped on Black's foot seven times in one short dance, and nearly toppled the Christmas tree in the Great Hall afterward.

Slow burn / probably plenty of OOC moments / the ultimate goal is to save Padfoot. References include Harry Potter, Pottermore, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and the author's wild inventions.
