The Jin forces attacked the city eight times. Li Yuheng died in battle seven times.
She had once fought past the obstruction of the peace faction, battling outside the city until her black robes were soaked through with blood. Her hands trembled so badly she could no longer hold her spear.
She had also once broken her weapons and gone alone to beg for peace outside the Jin camp, asking only that the Jin forces treat the people of the city well. At the time, Li Yuheng did not yet know that the Jin were all a pack of treacherous beasts.
She foresaw her younger brother's death, yet still sent him to lead the troops against the enemy. A young man on a white horse, with a silver sword and a long spear. Watching her brother ride away, Li Yuheng heard her heart grow numb and crack apart, bit by bit.
Standing atop the city wall, Li Yuheng looked down and saw the trust in the eyes of the people below. It was a mountain weighing on her shoulders, so heavy that even after dying seven times, she could not enter the cycle of reincarnation again.
She was furious, anguished, broken, and desperate,
but she could not surrender.
She had to win just once.
