On the day Su Jingheng and Ning Zhixu married, they hadn't even completed the formal bows before they were thrown, baggage and all, into an abandoned house in the suburbs, under the hateful gazes of the world.
Everyone in Luocheng laughed at how absurd the marriage was.
One was from a fallen family and had been cast aside like an object. The other was a discarded son used to ward off disaster, thrown outside the city to fend for himself.
Two unlucky people had found each other, and everyone was sure they'd meet a miserable end.
Yet amid all the turmoil and rumors, the two people at the center of it all were completely unfazed.
On their first night as newlyweds, Su Jingheng tossed aside the bridal quilt and pointed at the wooden door of the dilapidated house, drawing a clear line between herself and Ning Zhixu. "I get the east room. You get the west."
"I'm afraid that won't work."
The young man kicked open the creaking plank door, revealing a wall that had partly collapsed behind him. "Wolves got into the west side last night."

In the end, the whole city of Luocheng never got to laugh at Su Jingheng and Ning Zhixu.
Green mountains near the capital wound around the river, and their old house was rebuilt with a new tiled roof.
Su Jingheng twisted wild hemp into rope, while Ning Zhixu chopped green bamboo to weave a fence.
Peach blossoms bloomed in front of the house, and a stream flowed behind it.
She said she didn't like him, but every day she stayed in the courtyard, waiting with warm porridge for him to come home.
He said their life was only so-so, but when a new friend in the city invited him for drinks, he refused without a second thought and boasted, "My wife is afraid of the dark. I have to go home and keep her company!"
