Class III people are widely recognized as dangerous species, disrupting public order and upsetting the balance between species.
In Year 076 of the Yuan Era, the Imperial Government issued an edict requiring all Class III people to be forcibly relocated to Observation Zones. Anyone who violated the order, along with all accomplices, would be sentenced to death.
Observation Zones take many forms and their locations are top secret. Observation Zone No. 81 is on a small island, under the codename Tower.
On the first day Yu Fei is locked in the Tower, she recognizes its chief officer as her old classmate.
Chen Yuning, dressed in a black military uniform, stands with his hands behind his back atop the tower, surveying the dense crowd of detainees in the pouring rain as if they were a flock of lambs, washed clean and ready for slaughter.
What a beast in human clothing.
Yu Fei curses him silently.
But that night, as she is tortured by experimental electric shocks until she can barely stand the pain, reality tells her that if she can’t seize a lifeline, she’ll never see the sun outside the Tower again.
On a stormy, moonless night, Yu Fei arrives outside the chief officer’s office.
“You’re the fourth person to knock on my door tonight.” Chen Yuning sits behind his desk, watching her coldly. “Are you going to put on a striptease too?”
Yu Fei says, “I’ll become the strongest Guide.”
“So?”
“I need clean clothes, a soft bed, and a room where I can meditate.”
“I’m not responsible for housing detainees. You’ve come to the wrong person.”
“For a Sentinel who wants to rebel, the strongest Guide would make a good partner, wouldn’t she?”
A murderous intent suddenly bursts from Chen Yuning, and his powerful mental strength pierces her mind like a blade.
Yu Fei remains unmoved.
“I know what you’re planning,” she says, lowering her head and leaning close to whisper. “I’ve known for fifteen years.”
“Was it you who looked into my mental world back then?” Chen Yuning reaches out and traces her throat with a finger, like a lover’s burning touch, though he could kill her with a single strike.
“I knew my old classmate hadn’t forgotten me.” Yu Fei’s breath brushes his ear. “So you should remember how powerful I was back then.”
Amid the thunder and lightning outside, she asks, “Well? Shall we work together?”
He is silent for a moment, then smiles. “Deal.”
