The crown prince was born into privilege, with the bearing of a dragon and the beauty of a phoenix. He was the man chosen by fate, and no one doubted his future.
So when Li Luoyun chose the second prince, everyone thought she had gone mad.
Yet it was she who dragged the crown prince, destined to ascend the highest throne, down from his pedestal, step by step.
Li Luoyun thought that once her great task was complete, the second prince would honor his promise and welcome her in a phoenix crown and bridal robes.
But on their wedding night, she was locked in a dark chamber, with the crown prince, now a prisoner, beside her.
Then a fire burned them both to ashes.
When she opened her eyes again, she had become Luo Jun, the second daughter of the Luo family.
Five years had passed. That horrific fire had somehow been turned into a tragic tale of lovers who died together.
Storytellers spread the tale: "The deposed crown prince and Miss Li loved each other with all their hearts. They gave their lives for love, moving heaven and earth!"
As the audience sighed in sympathy, only Luo Jun remained expressionless.
As the storytelling came to an end, someone stopped Luo Jun.
The visitor was the famed Prince Jin, a man of iron and blood, devilishly handsome, with eyes she would never forget. They were just as crazed as they had been in the fire.
He called her, "Li Luoyun."
She denied it quietly. "Your Highness has mistaken me for someone else."
"Mistaken?" Prince Jin advanced step by step, his fingertip brushing her trembling lashes. "Even if you were burned to ashes, I'd still remember the way you looked when you schemed against me."
From that day on, Prince Jin became her nightmare, like a vengeful ghost returned from the dead, haunting her without end.
At banquets and in the women's quarters, he kept appearing when she least expected it, calling her by her old name again and again.
Luo Jun wanted to escape the vendetta of her past life, but he even began appearing in her dreams.
"Everyone says you and I died together for love. If we were lovers, shouldn't we be happy to reunite?"
His breath drew closer, scorching like the fires of hell, nearly burning her to ashes.
Luo Jun woke from her nightmare, drenched in cold sweat.
But someone was leaning over her inside the bed curtains. His voice was low with satisfaction as he laughed softly:
"You were crying in your dream. Were you thinking of me?"
