Shen Yanru became a widow.

Her husband died when she was still in the bloom of youth, but out of gratitude to him, she resolutely stayed with the Xie family and remained a widow.

On a freezing snowy night, Shen Yanru was alone in the run-down courtyard. Only the eldest son of the Xie family, Xie Rang, brought her charcoal.

But when spring chill gave way to a season of thunderstorms, she, dressed in mourning white, fell into Xie Rang’s burning embrace. His corded arms locked her in place, and she couldn’t struggle free.

A clap of thunder sounded. She trembled in fear, but he covered her ears and lowered his head to linger recklessly on her lips.

His voice, hot with repressed desire, sounded beside her ear:

Xie Rang was born the heir to the Duke’s estate. He was used to suppressing every desire and playing the cold, dispassionate gentleman in the eyes of the world.

Yet he developed feelings for his younger brother’s wife that he should never have had.

Years ago, Xie Rang rescued the last surviving member of the Shen family from bandits. After he saved the little girl, she came down with a serious illness. When she woke, she mistook his younger brother for her savior.

Thus they became a loving couple and married.

He hid his feelings and repeatedly held himself back.

But one night, in the midst of their passion, she curled up in his arms, and Xie Rang heard her unconsciously call out his younger brother’s name.

Xie Rang held her tight in the crook of his arm, his voice low. “Look carefully. Who am I?”

Her cousin is refined and noble, as beautiful as an orchid tree, and treats her with the utmost care. Outraged by the slander, Cen Jishuang snaps, “You’re the one who isn’t a good person!”

Later, after Pei Shu’s repeated unreasonable demands, Cen Jishuang gradually discovers her cousin’s true nature: a stone as white as jade, a treacherous man who only pretends to be virtuous.

Just as she loses hope, her cousin comes to propose marriage.

With the wedding about to be arranged, Pei Shu deliberately comes to watch the show.

Desperate to reject the proposal, Cen Jishuang looks at the crown prince who has come to her door. Her sickly, feverish brain misfires, and she kisses him.

From then on, Pei Shu can’t stop thinking about that kiss.

Afterward, whenever passion overwhelms her and she can no longer resist, Cen Jishuang regrets that her mind wasn’t clear when she provoked Pei Shu.

Whenever she struggles to escape, he pins her in the shadows, his voice so low it sounds unnerving. “I really am not a good person.”
