A mountain need not be high; with an immortal, it becomes renowned. Water need not be deep; with a dragon, it becomes sacred.
Changzhao had both the immortal and the dragon.
Yet he lived neither on a high mountain like an immortal nor in a deep pool like a hidden dragon.
He lived in the Fortress of Meropide, Fontaine's place of exile for criminals.
Among the generations of criminals exiled to the Fortress of Meropide, a legend had been passed down.
They said a Liyuean family had lived there for generations, exiled to the Fortress of Meropide in every generation because their ancestor had committed a grave crime that even the fortress's administrators could not uncover, implicating all their descendants.
But a rumor was just a rumor. What crime could possibly bring punishment upon one's descendants?
"That's right," said Changzhao, a serious criminal exiled to the Fortress of Meropide generation after generation.
There was no punishment that implicated descendants, nor were there any descendants at all.
The supposed subject of the rumor had, from beginning to end, been only him.
