Princess Chu Shu has a childhood sweetheart, a young man she loves. He went off to war, promising that if he earned enough military merit, he would ask the emperor for an edict granting them permission to marry.
After waiting and hoping, she finally sees General Ning return in triumph.
But when Ning You goes to a banquet at the palace, he doesn't ask the emperor for an edict to marry her. Instead, he volunteers to study at Yueqing Academy, far away in the mountains.
Furious, Chu Shu asks the empress for permission to study at Yueqing Academy too.
The academy is full of men, and she alone is stunningly beautiful and graceful.
Every day in class, the scent of her perfume drifts through the hall, making the other men fall for her. Ning You is the only one who acts as if she doesn't exist.
After class, Chu Shu corners Ning You at the entrance. Before she can even ask what his problem is, he says coldly, "Your Highness, please stop. I have no interest in you. If you come one step closer, I'll leave school and go home."
"You!" Chu Shu fumes.
That heartless man must have found someone else during his years in the northwest and forgotten the vows they made to each other.
Heartbroken, she spends a month at home, then decides to return to Yueqing Academy. There are plenty of talented young men there. She'll find herself a husband who's handsome, gifted, affectionate, and loyal.
Sheng Ruoqi is a good choice. He's handsome and well-read, the cool and aloof young gentleman all the noblewomen adore.
Jiang Yi is great, too. He's funny and, like her, enjoys music and opera. He invites her to perform Monkey Steals the Peach for the emperor at the Wanshou Festival. He plays the mischievous monkey, while she plays a celestial maiden, and they even earn a reward from the emperor.
Shen Zhiyun is another excellent option...
After considering one candidate after another, Chu Shu still can't make up her mind. So, for her birthday, she invites them all over for her father and brothers to take a look.
On her birthday, Ning You arrives with a pair of wild geese to ask for her hand in marriage.
Her father smiles and asks Chu Shu, "Is he one of your candidates, too?"
Ning You frowns. "Too?"
Chu Shu shakes her head. "This one? I don't know him." She points toward the entrance. "Those are my candidates."
