On her first day at work, Xu Wu is sent by her boss to a business dinner, only to unexpectedly run into her husband in name only, whom she hasn't seen in six months, ever since they got their marriage certificate.
The man is refined and cool, sitting at the head of the table in an easygoing pose. His deep-set eyes lift slightly, radiating an air of authority that makes it impossible to read what lies beneath them.
After several seconds of awkward silence, someone in the know jokes to break the ice: "Here to find your husband?"
Xu Wu snaps back to her senses. Hoping to avoid an awkward scene, she nods. "Yes. I'm worried he'll drink too much."
Who knew that from then on, the usually taciturn man would make a point of reporting in whenever he went to a business dinner:
- 8 p.m., Yijing, no drinks
- 10 p.m., Lihao, two drinks
- 11 p.m., Mixtime, six drinks
Xu Wu, who has to agonize over how to respond every few days: "..."
-
On the third day of their cold war over a disagreement, someone knocks on the master bedroom door.
Xu Wu deliberately makes him wait before getting up to open it, only to find the usually cold-hearted man looking worn and ashen, swaying unsteadily, with the faint smell of alcohol around him.
She pauses. "Did you drink?"
"Mm." Wen Xu looks distant, his lashes lowered. He leans toward her as if unable to stand, his low, magnetic voice falling against her shoulder. If she listens closely, there's even a hint of grievance in it. "I drank too much. I feel awful."
