By contrast, Chi Nanye is lazy, stupid by nature, and hated by everyone. Jealous of his older brother's talent and happy life, he kills him during the famine flight, only to end up dumped in the wilderness.

In the imperial exams, Chi Nanji comes first in the palace examination and earns the top jinshi rank.

In business, Chi Nanye becomes the richest man in the Great Yi Dynasty.

He never expected that spending day and night together during the famine flight would make him give his heart away.

Later, that pretty young man with clear eyes and pearly teeth became his husband.

His husband is thrifty and won't let him spend money extravagantly.

The vast merchant estate had carved beams, painted rafters, fine clothes, and lavish food in abundance, but not one place where he could feel safe and at home.

Though he grew up surrounded by wealth, Shangguan Yu learned the harshness of human nature at an early age. The affection between siblings and parental love that others took for granted were, to him, unattainable luxuries. Only when he hid away in the quiet study and lost himself in storybooks could he briefly forget the coldness around him and find a moment of comfort and respite.

Then, one year, an anonymous author's Notes from a Poor Family quietly found its way into his hands.

The perseverance and warmth between the lines, and the characters' struggles and steadfastness in the face of hardship, brought tears to the eyes of the long-lonely Shangguan Yu. So there really was someone in the world as alone and helpless as he was, someone who could change his fate against the odds through sheer courage.

He searched every bookshop in the city like a man possessed, desperate to meet the author who signed the book Anonymous.
