Synopsis:
Shen Zhitan was an illegitimate son from the family of a Hanlin Academy lecturer. Raised at his legal mother's side, he had meekness and forbearance written into his very bones. At fifteen, he married into the Marquis of Pingxiang's household as the principal spouse of the second son, Murong Lin.
For five years after their marriage, he was the quietest, weakest flower vase in the marquis's household, someone anyone could bully.
His husband, Murong Lin, had long been in love with someone else, and treated Shen Zhitan with nothing but scorn and coldness. His birth family found one way after another to exploit him, and he swallowed it all.
Then, in the autumn of the third year of Jinghe, word arrived from the border that Wei Chenglin had died in battle.
Distraught, Murong Lin dragged him along to pay his respects. White funeral banners whipped in the wind as Shen Zhitan stood in a corner with his head bowed, dressed in plain mourning clothes. Then he saw the man who was supposed to have died on the battlefield emerge slowly from the rear hall, clad in dark red and carrying a sword.
In the staged-death plot, the proud young General Wei looked past the guests filling the hall and fixed his gaze directly on Shen Zhitan.
It was a look Murong Lin had yearned for but never received, despite waiting for years.
After that, Wei Chenglin visited the marquis's residence every day. Murong Lin assumed his devotion had finally been returned and treated Shen Zhitan even more cruelly. When Shen Zhitan was drugged, Murong Lin even abandoned him in a brothel room just to answer Wei Chenglin's invitation.
He had no idea that Wei Chenglin had never been coming to see him.
